HART’s Route 1 Ridership Surges With Fare-Free Service
TAMPA – Ridership on Hillsborough Area Regional Transit’s (HART) Route 1 soared nearly 50% last month, following the city-funded initiative to make rides free through January 2026.
According to recent figures released by HART, Route 1 ridership jumped 47% in May 2025 compared to May 2024, exceeding 139,000 total trips. Additionally, on-time performance improved by 10%, resulting in faster and more reliable service for riders.
The boost comes after the Tampa City Council approved a $1.65 million grant in March to eliminate fares on Route 1 and increase the frequency of service. City officials anticipate the move will encourage greater public transit use, reducing traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity along the busy Florida Avenue corridor.
Riders can continue to use the service fare-free until January 2026. Trip planning information is available here.
