Fair Oaks Park Rec Center Opens in East Tampa
TAMPA — A newly rebuilt Fair Oaks Park Recreation Center officially opened its doors Monday in East Tampa, marking a major milestone in the city’s long-anticipated parks redevelopment effort. The $34.7 million facility is among the largest projects undertaken recently by the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department.
The 33,055-square-foot community center features dedicated spaces for seniors, multipurpose rooms, a teaching kitchen and an indoor basketball court. The building also incorporates a substantial array of solar panels designed to reduce energy costs.
City officials and neighborhood residents gathered for the opening amid holiday-season celebrations. Mayor Jane Castor described the opening ceremony in East Tampa as a gift coming just in time for the holidays.
The recreation center anchors the broader 10.25-acre East Tampa Recreation Complex, which includes outdoor amenities such as an outdoor basketball court, two pickleball courts, a multipurpose sports field, a children’s splash pad, an inclusive playground and approximately 1.5 miles of walking trails.
Councilwoman Naya Young noted the project reflects a long-term commitment to community investment, highlighting the role of parks in promoting health, wellness and neighborhood pride.
Final elements of the complex — including enhancements to Herbert D. Carrington Sr. Community Lake — are expected to be completed in Spring 2026.
