Will Atkins Suspends Campaign for Florida House, Endorses Luis Viera
Will Atkins, a Democratic candidate for Florida House District 67, announced Monday that he is suspending his campaign and endorsing Tampa City Councilman Luis Viera.
In a video posted to his campaign’s Facebook page, Atkins explained that he and Viera share similar values and a commitment to public service. By stepping aside, Atkins aims to consolidate Democratic support behind Viera in what is expected to be a competitive race.
District 67, which includes much of northern Hillsborough County, is currently held by Democrat Fentrice Driskell, who won reelection by 9 points in 2024. Driskell, the current Democratic Leader in the Florida House of Representatives, is termed out next year. With an open seat, Republicans are expected to contest the race seriously in 2026. Atkins’ early endorsement of Viera suggests Democrats are organizing early to maximize their chances of victory.
Viera, who currently serves on the Tampa City Council, has built a political profile around issues like disability services, unions, affordable housing, and support for first responders. With Atkins exiting the race, Viera becomes the leading Democratic contender heading into the 2026 election cycle.
